In the beginning, the Malaza clan lived at Luhleko under the authority of the Maseko chief. When Somhlolo came to power, the head of the Malaza clan was Shelewa Malaza.

The Malaza people later moved from Luhleko to Motshane, near modern-day Mbabane. By this time, they were led by Shelewa’s son, Bhekani. At Motshane, they settled at EKugacweni, within the royal residence of Chief Londundulu Nkhosi.

Today, however, the Malaza clan is scattered throughout Swaziland (Eswatini). While at Luhleko, the Malaza and the Maseko together were known as the Emangqamane (the Ngqamane). Other clans living at Luhleko at that time included the Mbhokane (Gama) and the Ngozo. All of these groups were under Maseko rule.

When Somhlolo emerged as a leader, the Maseko and the Malaza united to fight against him. The conflict arose as follows: Somhlolo gave a young woman to the Maseko chief. When she returned home for a visit, the Maseko people washed the Sidvwaba (the traditional women’s dress) and, in doing so, soiled it. Somhlolo’s people saw this as an insult to their daughter and attacked the Maseko. The Maseko were defeated, along with their allies—including the communities settled at Luhleko. Following this defeat, the Malaza could no longer cooperate with the Maseko and departed for Motshane. The Maseko remained at Luhleko.

Led by Bhekani Malaza, the Malaza people left Luhleko to seek refuge elsewhere. At Motshane, they came under the protection of the local chief, Londunduna Nkhosi, whose descendants still rule the area today.

Like other Swazi people, the Malaza were integrated into the Swazi regimental system. They frequently attended the royal homestead at Ludzidzini.

The Malaza clan praise/surname is as follows: Malaza, NaboNkhosi, Nabofodvulubovu, Nabondzab’uvajimako, yeviwa ngu Mshengu waShabalala, yathi isesangweni yaphangalala, Ngqamane, Mbulunga lomuhle…

In the past, the Malaza did not intermarry with the Maseko, Ngozo, or Mbhokane clans, but that restriction no longer applies today.

When the Malaza arrived at Motshane, they were still under the leadership of Bhekani, son of Shelewa. Bhekani is remembered for his skill in making hoes. After him, his grandson Mahlanya became the most important figure in the Malaza clan. Mahlanya fathered Shizela, who fathered Vavaha—a man who later disappeared from home and never returned.
