The de Angulo ( Of Angle) Clan of Ireland originate in Angle , Pembrokeshire, Wales. They accompanied Strongbow, Earl Gilbert de Clare in 1169 invasion of Ireland by the Cambro Normans, ie Welsh Normans from St Davids area of Wales. They were granted Navan and Nobber in Meath in 1176, and eventually the named morphed into Nangle. This family was granted land in Connacht where their name evolved into MacGoisdealbh in Irish, meaning son of Gosslyn, the sire of the family in Ireland. This in turn evolved into MacCostelloe, eventually Costelloe. A son of Gilbert MacGoisdealbh, Richard, was granted land in Moeniminy in Cork, Fermoy area, and he assumed the Nagle family name. An earlier member of this clan, William, was the oldest of the MacGoisdealbh, Sons of Gosslyn, Baron of Navan, and he was granted land in Lienster, Tullow and Moyacombe, from Ormond Deed #2 in 1176. Thus this clan from wales eventually had properties in all five provinces of Ireland then, including Meath, and eventually controlled the Barony of Costelloe in Mayo, still a district today. They also held on to their properties until the 1880s when land was dispersed to the tenants. Many famous daughters were the matriarchs of the O|Neils, OReilys, Maguires, Burkes, ODowds, Butlers, even George Canning PM of Britain, Princess Grace of Monaco , Nano Nagle the famous Nun, St Oliver Plunkett, and many more clans and religious edifices.
Quite an History of an obscure Clan from a village in Wales.
