The Makua are a Bantu ethnic group that live in northern Mozambique and parts of Tanzania. They are also known as Makhuwa or Wamakua. The Makua are the largest ethnic group in Mozambique.
Language:
The Makua speak variants of the Makua language, also known as Emakua.
Emakua is a Bantu language of the Niger-Congo language family.
It is the most widely spoken indigenous language in Mozambique.
Subdivisions:
The Makua are divided into four geographical and linguistic sub-divisions:
Lolo Makua
Lomwe Makua
Maua
Niassa Makua or Medo
Economy:
The Makua’s main carbohydrate staples are corn or cassava.
Their main protein-lipid sources are fish, peas, beans, and sometimes chickens.
They were originally an ironworking society, so their weapons were made of metals like knives.
Socio-political organization:
The Makua have a matrilineal kinship system.
