Shaka’s real mother was Nandi, a woman of the Langeni tribe. Nandi played a crucial role in Shaka’s upbringing and instilled in him the values that would later define his leadership. Her experiences as a single mother, facing adversity and stigma, shaped Shaka’s character and ambitions. Nandi’s influence was significant in Shaka’s rise to power and his establishment of the Zulu Kingdom.
Dingane, who was Shaka’s half-brother, came to power after assassinating Shaka in 1828. His reign was marked by conflict and instability, ultimately leading to his defeat by his half-brother Mpande and the Boer leader Andries Pretorius at the Battle of Ncome River in 1838. After this defeat, Dingane fled north into Swaziland, where he met his end, although the exact circumstances of his death remain uncertain. Some accounts suggest he was killed by his own people or by the Swazi, while others indicate he may have died in exile.
King Shaka’s death was orchestrated by his half-brother Dingane, who, along with their other brother Umhlangana and Shaka’s bodyguard Mbopa, conspired to assassinate him. This act was motivated by Shaka’s increasingly tyrannical rule and the fear that he would eliminate any potential rivals. The assassination took place in 1828, marking a significant shift in the leadership of the Zulu Kingdom as Dingane ascended to the throne following Shaka’s death.
