Nkwinika Clan Praises, Meaning & History

I am Enock Kwinika. The son of Tlhelani Kwinika. My grandfather, Pikanisi also known as Chisive, is believed to be the son of Bila who was one of the warriors under Ngungunyane.

My grandfather came to Zimbabwe (Rhodesia) still young running away from the Portuguese – Shangaan clashes.. The Kwinika clan is believed to have its origin in Bilene Macia in the Gaza Province of Mozambique. The military campaigns by the Portuguese to destroy King Ngungunyane’s resistance to Portuguese colonialism, led to the separation of families as they ran for dear life.

When my grandfather settled in Beitbridge, he was still young. As a result, he was not able to share much details about the meaning of the surname Kwinika or Kwinika clan praises. However, the meaning of the Kwinika surname he gave is this : Kwinika is something (Chipo) that eats fish.. Since “Chipo” (not sure whether Chipo is a bird or animal) is found in the river or sea, the Ngwenya totem is associated with the Kwinika people.

NB. I’d be glad to hear from other people the meaning of Kwinika surname and origin.
