Ngazi Mbelesi shawuke mabaso mlilo
It depends where you come from…. As well as the ancestor you descend from, some people are mlilo by birth others via immulagamation, I’ll give you a practical example…. Ngidabula kwinzalo yenduna yase mncwazi uMtotobi ka nkumba mabaso, okuyena abam’ziziba ngo Mlilo ngenxa yokuthi wayenga nqeni ukukhipha ibheshu lakhe ahlale phez’kwamalobo oMlilo, abantu basathi basamangazwa yilokho okwenza ngu Mntungwa, oka Ndaba avele kiphi ntshengula yakhe azibemele ugwayi…. Ngakho ke eyinye inzalo ka mtotobi bazibiza ngo mlilo abanye bazibiza ngo mabaso khepha ngabantu ababodwa ke’laba
OkaNdaba wayemuhle kakhulu ezintelezeni, nasenkalweni… Waye fuze usyise uNkumba ka Bhangwana owayeyi nyanga enkulu ngaphansi kwesilo soshangane ka zikode nxumalo Gasa… UMtotobi ka nkumba mabaso uphuma kwindlunkulu yamaNtungwa(Mabaso)… Uphuma kwinzalo yendodana ka Mabaso, owaflathela umuzi kababa walibangisa Le kwelabaHlengwe…. Wazakhela ugazi bamziziba ngo shawuke…. Lelo gama elithi shawuke “ugobolonda lomneke ngesizulu”… Nguyena owazala Bhangwana, ozala Nkumba, okuyena owazala uMtotobi. Yena nesilo selikaMthakwazi bahlangana endaweni okusejozini khona namhlanje (emaKhanyakude). Isilo umzilikazi kaMashobana efika emozimbique, wafika wathola abantu bako mabaso ababeziziziba ngo ngoMlilo( ayii inzalo ka Mtotobi) laba abantu babeduma ngokuba abakhandi bemikhonto nemikhuba, samangala Isilo wabuya ayithanda lento ayibonayo…. Wabakhela indawo yasemcwazi okuyindawo yase mosega north fig tree free state. Njengoba bengishilo okaNdaba wayemuhle kakhulu ezintelezeni nase’nhlelweni zempi, Isilo uMzilikazi ka Mashobane wathumela izethenjwa ukuba beyo’mthola uMtotobi bam’Bikele ukuthi inkosi iphethe igama, wasuka ejozini undaba walibangisa Le efig tree okuyilapho Isilo umzilikazi am’khuphula khona wambeka ukuba abeyiNduna yase mncwazi(1826) yi ngakho phela oMlilo be’mbungaza ngaye okaNdaba Waye’ngumkhuzi wempi onamandla… Uma besithi “Nina base Mncwazi bakhuluma ngozalo luka mtotobi, abanye bazalwa ngumfowabo uMaphenduka. Khepha thina sisebezisa umlilo njengesi-temo, singo mabaso, umabaso owayengu mne ka khumalo beNgama dodana kaMntungwa kaMbulazi mabaso wabe mdala. But unfortunately during the war of Vegkop(1837) mncwazi as well as other villages were burnt to the ground, mnzwazi in particular as it was one of the key regiments, it was more than just a village it was legion…. Yingakho besibonga ngokuthi “Abathwali bomlilo ngenkumba, mtotobi ka nkumba Nina enahlula abelungu ngezibhamu zawo”
So it honestly depends where you come from, you’ll often find the clan names used by those descended from matsena
ka Bhangwana who ruled after his father bangwana, who was called chauke (not shawuke although he was his grandfather) so he ended up calling the entire nation chauke, hence today chauke people use mlilo clan names, but you won’t find those of mtotobi kaNkumba mabaso/mlilo as it often causes confusion as he was only called mlilo because of the things he could do… And yet he was the chief of a village of people who adopted the mlilo surename, and as their chief, they obviously pay homage to him in thier clan names hence his mentioned, as simple as thinfs are, it’s also very complicated because yet again you don’t want to refer to someone as someone their not…. I’m a Shawuke – mabaso – mlilo I’d hate for you to mistaken me for a chauke or even mlilo for that matter when used in the wrong context in my context (Mtotobi, mabaso, skhotana, khoza, Gumede… Etc) so either shawuke or mabaso clan names will do.
Ngethemba ukuba lokhu kuzo phendula imbuzi yakho emningi.
Mandisa
There is history of the mlilo surname on the internet though i did not read it.

Umlilo uvela KwaCebekhulu kanye noSandile (ophethe amaXhosa angamaRharhabe oQwabe e-Eastern Cape) ababuye bambize ngoMazibuko or Bukhosi or Nkosi or Maseko or Mjoli or Moloi or Gcwabe or Gwambe or Mugabe or Macambi or Mlambi or Araph or Raphaia or Mhlaba or Mlaba or Mahlaba or Mathaba or Mandaba. ONkosi bagels kuNzuza, eMaNgweni kwela Dinizulu ukhokho wethu. ONzuza baphuma lwaDhlomo. Onke lawa amaNdebele, iziwe esiyizo.
OMkhize. OMbambo = AbaMbo = AmaPhuthi = iziMpunzi.
Owesithathu umuzi wakwaCebekhulu oJiyane. UMlilo uzalwa uSandile or Mazibuko = Mmguni = Ngoni = Ngweni = Kweny = Bayeni = Bekani = Mthethwa = Bikwayo = Qwabeni = Gcwabini = Gwabini = Ngwane = Maun = Aaron. Inzalo kaAaron owayenguMachi ezalwa uMzeki or Mkhize noMasilela or Sithupha or Tubane or Sibiya, oyinzalo kaManasse or MaGazi or Mlazi = Mnyazi = Manyathi = Manahath no Ahod or Arod or Herod = Ogadi = Mngadi = Khathi = Nako = Nango = Makua = Mganu = Kanu = Mgcwangu = Mncwango = Mukwago.
OMangethe, oNsele, KaLinda Mkhonto = Zwane = Msane = Mzila = Basia = Masia = Basan = Esan = Azane = Azania = Mathanias = Mthaniya = Matiwane obusa abakwaMthethwa. Wahlakazwa umbuso abizwa ngokuthi aBeTswana, amaXhosa, Venda, Sotho but still Mthaniya and still Zulu. So, oMlilo abaningi uzobathola ebukhosini bakwaXhosa (Xhosa = Khoza = Ngoza = Ela = Maoela = Mawela = Hosa = Hoza = Hauser = Hausa = Aussa).
That is why there are so many Zwanes in Eastern Cape. And Tswana = Zwana = Zwane = Ziyane = Tiyane = Jiyane = Giyane = Gcwanini = kaNgwane = Khalange = Khalanga = Bukalanga.
