The Maxase clan name, while not widely common, is rich with historical significance. The surname originated during the time of the latest king, Mkhulu Nkosi, who was the father of Kamadangama. The name was bestowed after a notable event where Mkhulu Nkosi trapped and killed a crocodile in a river, returning with it to show his people. His right-hand man, an elder named Sphundulu, subsequently gave him the name “Maxase,” which became the clan’s surname.
Women of the clan are called Kamaxase. An interesting note is that Mkhulu Nkosi’s father was originally from Mexico, meaning the lineage is not entirely indigenous to Africa.
