The first question that arises is that how can a black person have a surname such as Grootboom?
If you look into the history of South Africa and you see the segregation that happened, you’d understand what colonisers did to our people.
In an attempt to make themselves a superior race, they forced some of our people to change their surnames, to make a literal translation from isiZulu to Afrikaans.
The real meaning of Grootboom is Mthimkhulu which in isiZulu is broken down to mean ‘Umuthi Omkhulu’ (A great tree)
In conclusion, Grootboom is Afrikaans for a great tree and in isiZulu it means Mthimkhulu and we have many people who carry this surname.
Grootboom is exactly the same as Mthimkhulu and because of this, they share the exact same clan names or clan praises.
