John Langalibalele Dube

John Langalibalele Dube born on 11 February 1871 was a South African essayist, philosopher, educator, politician, publisher, editor, novelist and poet. He was the founding president of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which became the African National Congress in 1923. He was an uncle to Dr Pixley ka isaka Seme with whom they founded SANNC along. Dube served as the president of SANNC between 1912 and 1917. He was brought to America by returning missionaries and attended Oberlin Preparatory Academy. He returned to South Africa, where in 1903 he and his first wife, Nokutela Dube, founded a newspaper, what is now Ilanga lase Natal.

In 1901 he founded the Ohlange High School based on the Tuskegee Institue founded by Booker T Washington. He also wanted black people to go into business, so in 1903 he founded the isiZulu newspaper Ilanga. In 1930, John Dube published “Shaka’s Body Servant.” He also wrote about the lives of Zulu rulers, including King Dinizulu.

He was a conservative politician. His ANC was not a militant party of the 1960s, but he never lost sight of two things: human rights, and the need for Africans to stand together. That was the message John Langalibalele Dube was preaching until he died in 1946.

Themba Harry Gwala

Themba Harry Gwala born on 30 July 1920 & passed-on on 20 June 1995 was a revolutionary leader in the African National Congress (ANC) and South African Communist Party (SACP) in South Africa.

Harry Gwala trained as a teacher at Adams College and taught at Slangspruit where his students included Moses Mabhida. In 1942, Gwala joined the Communist Party of South Africa, and in 1944 joined the ANC, and moved into trade union organisation in the chemical, construction, and rubber industries. He was among the organisers of a national stay-away in 1950, and was subsequently banned under the Suppression of Communism Act.

Sibusiso Mandlenkosi Emmanuel Bengu

Sibusiso Mandlenkosi Emmanuel Bengu is a retired South African politician. Bengu was born in Kranskop, Natal and become a teacher in 1952. Sibusiso founded the Dlangezwa High School near Empangeni in 1969 and was principal until 1976.

Rev. Nicholas Bhekinkosi Hepworth Bhengu

Rev. Nicholas Bhekinkosi Hepworth Bhengu was born on September 5, 1909 at Entumeni, KwaZulu-Natal. Known as “Manotsha”, “Papakho”, “uMkhulu” or “uKhehla” by his converts, he was the Founder of the Africa Back to God Crusade in the 1950s. Bhengu was an evangelist, a teacher of the word, and a pastor.

Jabu Khanyile

Jabu Khanyile was a South African musician and lead vocalist from the band Bayete.

Born: 28 February 1957 in Soweto, Khanyile performed at the Live 8 concert in Johannesburg in July 2005. His final public appearance was in July 2006 at the “Africa Calling” handover ceremony at the end of the World Cup in Berlin. 

He died in November 2006 after a battle with diabetes and prostate cancer.
